At last, the Gods of Rock ‘n’ Roll have heard our prayers. Instead of silencing us, they’ve
given us the much overlooked Forevermore by Whitesnake in a box so lavish it could hold
the Ark of the Covenant. It includes four CDs, a Blu-ray, a hefty 60-page booklet with
Coverdale sharing sweet thoughts from the page, plus a tour book and a poster large enoughto hide your ex’s memory. Unlike Metallica, who will sell you a box of beer mats and call it deluxe.
Back in 2011 critics said it was “overproduced” and “too polished.” Which in translation
means: it sounded too good for their peasant ears. Funny when you think that those same
critics don't moan when U2 churn out elevator music wrapped in tinfoil.
Now that Warner/Rhino has remixed it, David’s voice somehow sounds smoother and the
riffs even heavier. Of course, the critics will complain about yet another Whitesnake reissue
and question why anyone needs this many discs. I say, balderdash. If Coverdale released an
18-CD box set of him humming in the shower, I’d sell my grandma’s antique tea set just to
pre-order.
As with the other deluxe boxes you get a CD of the original mix but it’s the Evolutions disc
(at least for me) is incredibly entertaining as it showcases the writing of the album and of
course what the hell was going on in the minds of Doug Aldrich and Lord Coverdale.
The Blu-ray includes promo videos, live versions, and behind-the-scenes footage. Watching
the Snake behind the curtain feels like catching Zeus in his bathrobe. It’s divine, a bit silly,
but truly glorious. Even the essay in the booklet sounds as if David is sharing stories straight
from Mount Olympus.
Compared to the endless sludge of “anniversary editions” from bands who should’ve retired
decades ago, this boxset is nothing short of holy.
If you add this to your growing collection of deluxe Whitesnake boxes, your popularity will
soar and you’ll attract attention of the opposite (or same) sex in ways you will find sordid and possibly degrading. (This has yet to be proven)
