Hi Julian thanks for taking time out to speak with me today!
Your new single 'What's It Gonna Be' came out on the 12th July. Congrats!
What specific themes or experiences fueled its lyrical depth?
"We often like to put a positive spin on our lyrics, and with this we really wanted to do something totally up-lifting. I don't think there was any one specific example or experience we were drawing from, but we've all been there, when you're overwhelmed with life and you just need that one moment of clarity to say, I'm gonna get out of this rut no matter what"
How did the band approach its sonic landscape, and what elements make it uniquely Fury?
"I think our approach was the same as usual, which is, like a bull in a china shop haha. Loud guitars, loud drums, loud vocals. Obviously it's the first new song with Nyah taking on lead vocal duties and we wanted to absolutely show that off, which is partly why we decided to have that middle section with Nyah doing some cool vocalisations rather than having your traditional style guitar solo there."
Were there any particular challenges or breakthroughs during its production?
"I think that recording this song really helped Nyah hone how she would approach recording the rest of the album. Nyah actually recorded the vocals for it twice, she wasn't happy with the the first recording she did, so she went back in and did it again, and the results speak for themselves, she sounds incredible on it. I think she then carried that energy through to the rest of the album"
And looking ahead, what does this single represent for your evolving sound, and how do you envision it resonating with fans in a live setting?
"Obviously the biggest thing is Nyah helming the track, and yeah that's definitely something you'll see more of going forward. We've played the song a few times live already and always had a great response, so I'm looking forward to seeing the reaction to it now that the single is out and people know the song a bit better"
This being the 2nd single taken from your upcoming album 'Interceptor', would you say that you have veered away from your old style and created a newer fresher version of Fury with this album?
"Yes and no. We've always tried to bring something new to the table on each album, I've never been interested in trying to make the same album over and over again. But at the same time, there are some core elements that make up Fury. That being fun, energetic, powerful songs, with strong melodies, crunching guitars, soaring vocals, pounding drums, rumbling bass etc etc, and that's all still there. I kinda see it as a science experiment where, each time, you've got all same things going in, just in different quantities, and the outcome can sometimes be unexpected haha. Then you throw a little bit of something different in to really fuck things up." "Obviously for this album we went with a different producer, that being Todd Campbell, so that is also a big change. Working with Todd has been great, and I love the sound of this new album, it's somehow the most raw and real, and somehow the most refined we've ever sounded on record. I think it's the closet we've come to capturing our live energy on a record"
Do you feel this album will draw new listeners in?
"I certainly hope so. If I say so myself there's a lot on this album to enjoy, and each song has it's own unique and distinct personality. I think this is our best work yet, and I can't wait for everyone to hear it."

What is your favourite track on the new album and why?
"Now that is a tricky question, if I had to choose I would probably say the closing track Undistilled. It's the track with the aforementioned extra ingredient that takes the experiment somewhere completely different. Definitely the biggest curveball of the album, and I like that. And once again Nyah's vocals just sound absolutely amazing on it. Really looking forward to seeing what people make of it."
Is there a message you want your fans to take from this album?
"Yeah, Fury are here, we plan to be for a long while yet, and we're gonna do exactly what we wanna do"
We see you guys are lined up to play the fabulous FIREVOLT in August, if you could describe this festival in 3 words what would they be?
"Rock" "N" "Roll"

Do you draw up lyrics from experiences such as playing live or are they based off soulful life experiences?
"Bit of both, it's funny, this is probably the most introspective album we've ever done. There's a song on the new album called Walk Away that's specifically about my life as a musician, being in a band, and kinda about how tough and draining it can be. But we've also done songs in the past such as It's Rock n Roll and Who Are You? That are about having that love for music and playing live. And even in Walk Away I fully admit that even though I'll sometimes think about...well...walking away haha, I know I won't. I'm in it for life haha"
What do you achieve and draw from each experience such as playing live and writing in the studio personally?
"I love playing live, there's no other thrill like it. The energy, the atmosphere, the smell of beer and sweat haha, it's incredible. And of course when the crowd is singing along, cheering, clapping, headbanging, it's just an absolute privilege knowing that you're positively affecting them and hopefully helping them have a great day/night, week."
Curveball Question If you could give 1 band member a colonic, who would it be and why?
"As long as I wouldn't have to be directly involved, Tom Fenn. He's an absolute enigma of a human being, so it's fascinating putting him various situation to see what he'll do.
